Look for Better Opportunities
The reasons for asking Shamus to resign are not justified. Shamus shall explore all means to counter Roger’s attempt to “overthrow” him. Shamus could appeal against Roger’s decision by bringing to the board of directors the controversial KPI points which forms the bone of contention. If Shamus has the full support of his key staff and there are opportunities outside, he could counter Roger’s move with the threat of a mass defection of key staff to a new company. Should all means fail, Shamus should not resign without securing another job as the prospect of long-term unemployment in today’s competitive job market is no longer remote. Neither should Shamus stay long in Crystallus as it was clear that Roger has a personal grudge towards him, and more problems may be brewing for Shamus if he were to stay on. It is also likely Roger may fire him at any time. The best thing Shamus could do after an unsuccessful fight is to bide time by staying on and accepting a lower position in Crystallus while spending time to network more with the outside world and looking out for good career opportunities. He should successfully transit to another company at an opportune time.—Contributed by Ong Kian Hui # # # # # # # # # # No Point Asking for Compensation
Shamus may want to have a chat with Thomas about his case and get some advice since they have been close. He should set aside the rumour of Roger wanting his friend to be in the company or promote Felicia, and instead work on a short-term deal to get his stay in the company. For example, Shamus will work towards getting those targets met within the next six months. This will give him time to secure another job and time for him to prove Roger wrong. He can leave the company with good results and save his pride and integrity at the same time. I feel that asking for compensation does not look good and I believe the company did pay Shamus his fair share for the MD position. Frankly, there can always be 101 reasons for the company to "get rid" of those who are in the way, hence what is the point of asking for compensation?—Contributed by Lam Wai Yee Copyright © 2013 Singapore Institute of Management. |
