Managing Human Capital in the Perfect Economic Storm

The last 12 months of economic downturn has been one of the most severe in the past few decades. Coupled with H1N1 in the last few months, this scenario can be aptly described as the perfect economic storm. It has been a uphill task for businesses to manage in such economic storm, especially in managing one of their key assets - human capital. We look at some of the manpower initiatives made available to organizations to help them manage the economic storm and more importantly, to prepare their human capital for the next upturn.

Low Peck Kem, is Director, People Matters Department, responsible for HR, Organization Development, Operations, Information and Facilities management and Emergency Preparedness at the Ministry of Manpower. She is also Project Director, National HR Capability Building, focused on building Singapore into the leading HR centre of Asia. Prior to joining the civil service, Ms Low was Vice President, HR for Avago Technologies Asia, supporting a 5000 strong regional workforce. She was previously HR Director for Agilent Technologies, supporting Singapore, Philippines and Thailand. Ms Low also serves outside of MOM on the Community Chest Fund Raising Committee SHARE and numerous other voluntary organisations.
