Sound Sense
It is said of some speakers that their reading of the telephone directory
can sound like poetry. Sadly, we are more familiar with those who read
poetry like the telephone directory! What makes ‘properly pronounced’,
and fluently spoken English still monotonous and ‘meaningless’ to
listeners? Explore the inherent rhythms of English speech and practise
incorporating it in your own speech.
Dominic E Quah has a Licentiate in Speech and Drama. He has worked with children
of all ages and adults for performance and presentation. He has prepared
many successful candidates for the licentiate. Apart from work in Singapore,
he has also trained English, and Speech and Drama teachers in Malaysia and
China.
