Programme Nature
The Higher Diplomas in International Hotel Management and European Culinary Management develop personnel with focused goals in the hospitality industry. The higher diplomas put you on the right path to success in an industry that offers a multitude of opportunities.
The programmes impart operational and strategic management tools required for international hotel, tourism and restaurant management, while nurturing professionalism and chararacteristics essential for success in the industry. The Higher Diploma in European Culinary Management, in particular, offers a specialised education in culinary management with a European focus for students who have already obtained appropriate basic qualifications in culinary arts or sciences.
The Higher Diploma in European Culinary Management serves as a pathway to the IMI Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in European Culinary Management in IMI, Switzerland. The Higher Diploma in International Hotel Management serves as a pathway to the IMI Bachelor of Arts (Honours):
Combining management science with actual practice in the hospitality industry, the programmes provide you with a launch pad to a fulfilling career. Graduated students will be awarded a transcript and a Higher Diploma certificate from IMI upon completion.

![]() Hospitality Preparatory Course
The course aims to provide diploma holders (without hospitality background) with the fundamental skills and knowledge of front office operations as well as front office related topics, and comprises of two modules,namely: Introduction to F&B Service
This module aims to provide students with a basic foundation in food and beverage (F&B) service. Students will be taught basic F&B service skills such as table setting, order-taking, service sequence and beverage service that are essential to a foodservice professional in providing a pleasant dining experience. Besides service skills, students will acquire knowledge on important operational issues pertaining to F&B operations.
Front Office Management This module aims to provide students with the fundamental skills and knowledge of front office operations, as well as front office related topics including revenue management, housekeeping, security and loss prevention management. Besides front office knowledge, students will also gain a comprehensive understanding of the hotel business ranging from different types of hotels, guestrooms to an overview of the functional departments within a hotel.
Business Preparatory Course
This preparatory course applies to holders of technical diplomas from local polytechnics and the course covers three cores business modules, namely: Marketing
This module aims to provide an overview of the concepts and techniques of the marketing process in today's dynamic environment and its interrelationship with other business functions. Both controllable and uncontrollable variables surrounding the execution of the marketing function and the use of the marketing mix successfully to reach each buyer are studied. This module provides the foundation for more advanced marketing-oriented courses by covering a wide range of topics including consumer behaviour, market research, marketing process and global marketing.
Economics
At the core, this module studies the economic problem of the scarcity of resources that is facing a person, a firm or a society. It assumes that rational people normally make choices to consume the scarce resources in terms of comparing marginal benefit and marginal cost. The contents of this module can be divided into two parts, principles of microeconomics (economics and choice at individual level) and principles of macroeconomics (economics and choice at aggregate level).
Accounting & Finance This module deals primarily with the study of the two main branches of accounting which are financial accounting and management accounting as well as investment appraisal. The first part of the module covers financial accounting. Topics include double entry book-keeping and the preparation of basic financial statements and financial analysis. The second part of the module covers management accounting techniques for planning, control and decision-making and investment appraisal techniques.

Upon successful completion of the Higher Diploma programme at SIM, students can progross to IMI, Switzerland to pursue their preferred Bachelor's pathway in : A. International Hotel Management B. International Tourism Management C. International Hotel & Tourism Management D. International Hotel & Events Management E. International Tourism & Events Management F. European Culinary Management Upon completion of their studies at IMI in Switzerland, students receive 2 degrees : one from IMI and one from Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). General managers, resident managers, management trainees, sales and marketing jobs, and front office jobs are a few of the long list of potential jobs. Resorts tend to have similar jobs as for hotels; however, larger resorts will have greater job opportunities and require more assistants in all areas. The airlines are a major travel industry employer, offering a host of jobs at many levels, ranging from entry level to top management. illustrative jobs are reservation agents, flight attendants, airline food service jobs, sales jobs, training staff, and research jobs. The cruise industry is the fastest-growing segment of the tourism industry today. Job opportunities include those for sale representatives, market researches, and recreation directors. Other major employers are food service, rental car companies, travel agents, tour operators, tourism and hospitality educators, recreation and leisure industry, meeting planners, and the gaming industry. Fee Information At the point of application, a fee of S$64.20 (inclusive of 7% GST) has to be paid to SIM. Upon being offered a place in the programme, students are required to pay course fees of:
(1) S$12,735.15 (inclusive of 7% GST) for their 6 months of study at SIM
The fee chargeable by IMI, should the student progress to their IMI preferred pathway are: (a) IMI Registration Fee: CHF2,800* (b) Course Fees in IMI: CHF21,300*
*These fees include food and lodging at IMI but exclude airfare to Switzerland. The course fee for IMI will be revised to CHF24,300 for students admitted into SIM Higher Diploma programmes from January 2011 onwards. The IMI Registration Fee includes:
