Objectives
Programme NatureThe BSc (Hons) Business Management and BSc (Hons) International Business suite of programmes are structured to reflect the ever-changing world of business and deal with topics that are relevant to a wide range of employers. Through a combination of academic theory and practical work, students develop their critical thinking skills as they share views, debate and discuss.All the degrees have the same underlying philosophy - they are broad-based to build a firm foundation for the working world, without the limitations of over-specialisation. One of the advantages of these degrees is that they have allowed Birmingham graduates to keep their options open – and this has been a value that employers find attractive. Mode Of DeliveryThe BSc (Hons) Business Management and BSc (Hons) International Business suite of programmes are usually two-year programmes, with exemption of the Year 1. The Second and Third year 3 of study comprises of three semesters, with each semester spanning over a period of four months. Lessons are conducted at SIM in the day, between Monday and Friday. The BSc (Hons) Business Management equips students with the expertise needed to understand business and management on both a national and global scale. It is structured to reflect the changing world of business. While this degree has always sought to change with the business environment, it maintains the philosophy that future leaders of industry need a sound and broad-based education.
BSc (Hons) Business Management with Language
The BSc (Hons) Business Management with Language combines a broad-based business degree with the opportunity to develop a good working knowledge of a foreign language. Wherever you are in the world, there are enormous advantages in possessing this combination of skills. Students will spend one quarter of their time studying Chinese (Mandarin).
BSc (Hons) Business Management with Industrial Placement
As today's employers look for graduates who have both academic ability and practical experience in a real business environment, the programme offers students the opportunity to gain an in-depth knowledge of a range of business topics combined with two semesters spent in industry putting into practice what they have learned. This is a broad-based degree, where students will spend time studying themes found in the actual arena of business, and they will also graduate with a firm foundation for the real world of work.
BSc (Hons) International Business
The BSc (Hons) International Business programme aims to impart an international experience and cultural awareness to the student. Today’s business is increasingly international in scope. There are advantages in combining knowledge of modern business with the experience of another culture. The programme of study will be supplemented with two semesters spent in an overseas environment, either working or studying. This programme will appeal to students who are considering a future career in international management.
BSc (Hons) International Business with Language
This programme equips the students with the expertise needed to understand business in a global scale, while allowing them the opportunity to develop a good working knowledge of a foreign language. Wherever you are in the world, there are enormous advantages in possessing this combination of skills. Students will spend one quarter of their time studying Chinese (Mandarin).

*Those with non-Business related diplomas can be admitted into the Bachelor's programme, upon successful completion of a 3-months' Business Preparatory Programme offered by SIM.
For candidates opting for Mandarin, a basic level of proficiency is required. Business Preparatory Course
The business preparatory course consists of 3 modules:
Marketing
This module aims to provide an overview of the concepts and techniques of the marketing process in today's dynamic environment and its interrelationship with other business functions. Both controllable and uncontrollable variables surrounding the execution of the marketing function and the use of the marketing mix successfully to reach each buyer are studied. This module provides the foundation for more advanced marketing-oriented courses by covering a wide range of topics including consumer behaviour, market research, marketing process and global marketing.
Economics
At the core, this module studies the economic problem of the scarcity of resources that is facing a person, a firm or a society. It assumes that rational people normally make choices to consume the scarce resources in terms of comparing marginal benefit and marginal cost. The contents of this module can be divided into two parts, principles of microeconomics (economics and choice at individual level) and principles of macroeconomics (economics and choice at aggregate level).
Accounting & Finance This module deals primarily with the study of the two main branches of accounting which are financial accounting and management accounting as well as investment appraisal. The first part of the module covers financial accounting. Topics include double entry book-keeping and the preparation of basic financial statements and financial analysis. The second part of the module covers management accounting techniques for planning, control and decision-making and investment appraisal techniques.
Progression Criteria In order to progress from year 2 to Year 3, a student must fulfil the following: 1)To obtain a minimum of 40 marks for the Year 2 subjects 2)Students must obtain 100 credit from the 120 credits modules offered in Year 2. Graduation Criteria The overall mark obtained is based on 25% of the Year 2 average and 75% Year 3 average and the final degree of honors classification will be based on the following mark ranges: 1st class - 70% and above 2nd upper - 60 to 69% 2nd lower - 50 to 59% 3rd class - 40 to 49% In addition to the above mark ranges, for classification of honors, students need to satisfy the following requirements: - Obtain a minimum of 100 credits out of the 120 credits required for the final year in which a total of 200 credits for Year 2 and Year 3 to be obtained. Attendance Requirements Good attendance contributes to the successful completion of modules and enhances the quality of the students' learning experience. SIM requires both international and local students to attend all scheduled lessons and activities. Under the University, local full-time students are required to attain attendance of 100% and international students who are issued a student pass by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) are required to achieve an attendance of 90%. Assessment/ Examination Assessment components vary from module to module. For 10 credit module, it will be either 100% assignment based or 100% examination based.For 20 credits module, it will comprise of both assignment and examination.
